The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has urged all Corps Employers to enhance the welfare of Corps Members assigned to serve with them. He emphasized that any employer failing to provide accommodation and transportation for Corps Members would face blacklisting from accessing Corps services.
He made this statement while engaging with Corps Members in Lokoja during his working visit to Kogi State.
The NYSC Chief Executive reassured Corps Members that the Federal Government is firmly dedicated to their security and welfare. He also called upon state and local governments, as well as other stakeholders, to bolster their support for the Scheme.
General Nafiu reminded the Corps Members that security is a collective responsibility. He encouraged them to promptly report any suspicious activities to the appropriate security agencies.
The Director-General advised the Corps Members to uphold discipline and commitment to their duties, while avoiding any inappropriate behavior. He reminded them that they represent their families, their educational institutions, and the NYSC.
He further motivated them to take their post-camp Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) training seriously, in order to refine their selected skills before the conclusion of their service year. He reiterated the importance of embracing small-scale businesses as Corps Members, stating that this could lead them to become entrepreneurs.
“Be proactive, identify business opportunities within your host communities, and start generating income for yourselves even now,” he stated.
While recognizing the current economic difficulties, he encouraged them to cultivate a saving culture, noting that it serves as the foundation for future prosperity.
“Take your service year as a training ground for future financial management by managing your finances wisely,” he stressed.
NYSC Kogi State Coordinator, MrsTochi Chika Chris-Moneke, expressed gratitude to the Director-General for the visit. She said it demonstrated his commitment to the welfare and security of Corps members and staff.
Mrs Chris-Moneke disclosed that the Secretariat was planning to conduct Corps employers’ workshop and a Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD) programme in the coming weeks.
