Former vice president and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in 2023, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has revealed what his next action would be should he fail to get the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress, ADC.
Speaking on Arise News, Atiku, who is one of the frontline presidential aspirants of the coalition, said he would support whoever emerges as the party’s presidential candidate.
Asked whether he would step aside if a consensus candidate emerges within the ADC Coalition, the former vice president said he would support the winner.
He explained that the first option in coalition would be to work out a consensus, but when that fails then they would go for direct primaries.
“No, it’s not the issue of stepping aside, but would I support,” he said.
“I think what would I say in the coalition is that we will have first option. The first option will be to work out the consensus. If that doesn’t, of course emerge, then we go for direct primaries. I mean, I will support anybody who emerges.
“As far as the party is concerned, we will aim at consensus. If we don’t get it, then we’ll go for elections.
“I don’t expect we will get to that level [of dispute] because we are dealing with really mature politicians and experienced politicians as well.
“The ambition was a different thing altogether, but we have all agreed that this is the way to save democracy in this country.”
