Former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and his decision to join the African Democratic Congress, ADC.
Tambuwal, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives and former Governor of Sokoto State, said his departure from the PDP was prompted by the partyās prolonged internal crisis, leadership disputes, and deepening divisions.
He disclosed his defection in a statement shared on his X account in the early hours of Thursday.
He confirmed that he had notified his ward chairman of his resignation through a written letter before officially aligning with the ADC alongside his political allies and supporters.
āToday, after deep reflection and consultations, I have formally resigned my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party, and I have communicated my resignation to my ward chairman in writing,ā he said.
Tambuwal acknowledged the significant role the PDP played in his political journey, which saw him serve as Speaker of the House of Representatives and complete two terms as governor of Sokoto State.
However, he noted that the partyās worsening internal challenges made it difficult for him to remain.
āThe persistent internal crisis, leadership disagreements, and growing divisions within the PDP have made it increasingly difficult to continue my membership of the party. These developments have unfortunately weakened the unity and direction that once defined the party and have necessitated this decision,ā he stated.
Explaining his choice of the ADC as his new political platform, Tambuwal said he believes the party provides a more viable structure for advancing democratic governance in Nigeria.
āI am convinced that this decision is guided by my belief that Nigeria needs a stronger political platform built on integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, and a clear commitment to national development,ā he added, reaffirming his commitment to democracy, justice and national unity.
