The Director of Internal Audit at the Nigerian Communications Commission, Stella Erebor, has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Conference Preparatory Committee for the African Telecommunications Union.
In her remarks following her appointment in Abuja on Monday, Erebor emphasized the committee’s vital role in ensuring that Africa presents a cohesive stance ahead of the ATU Conference of Plenipotentiaries set for Thursday.
“The Conference Preparatory Committee is responsible for organizing the significant meeting scheduled for later this week. Its purpose is to prepare the necessary documents that will be submitted to the Conference of Plenipotentiaries,” Erebor clarified.
She highlighted that the ATU functions on a four-year cycle, and the preparatory meeting assesses all the efforts made by the Union to enhance telecommunications across Africa and to coordinate the participation of African nations in the International Telecommunication Union.
“The ATU has been active over the past four years. During this conference, we will review all the initiatives undertaken by the ATU to promote telecommunications in Africa and to facilitate the involvement of African countries in the ITU,” she stated.
Erebor further explained that the primary goal of the preparatory process is to ensure that the continent articulates a unified position on global platforms.
“It is crucial for Africa to present its issues collectively on the international stage. This approach garners more attention than when individual countries address their challenges separately. Therefore, the purpose of this conference is to ensure that Africa’s voice is acknowledged and valued,” Erebor concluded.
The Preparatory Committee meeting in Abuja aims to consolidate draft resolutions, agenda items, and common positions that will be presented at the ATU Conference of Plenipotentiaries later this week.
